Fixed v.s Swinging rear caliper

I noticed that the rear calipers on MY 98, and MY 98 up to s/n X3020000 were all of the "Fixed" type. Whereas later MY'99 and '00 were built with with both Fixed and Swinging types. Fixed style rear calipers have square brake pads, and dual cylinders. The Swinging type has more bananna shaped pads, and just one inboard piston applying pressure.
The "Fixed" type looks burlier. With two pistone -each operating one pad, I'd expect the pads to be less likely to hang up, and therefore last longer. But, looking at the front calipers, they appear to be of the swinging type each having one inboard piston.
It seems odd. Anyone know why only one style is present in the earliest 9-5s, and both are used during later year builds?
