The old dual piston type rear calipers are prone to having the pad backing plates getting rust bound in the caliper slots. I have seen this exact same design since the 60's, and these were used on BMWs, Opels, and Volvo that I can attest to. The pistons themselves are prone to siezing up. The pads need shims, but they are not easy to find, and the orginals are thin steel and they rust away very quickly in some climates. The cross shaped hold down springs rust badly and the silly little rivet that joins them rusts out. You have to coat those and the hold down pins with grease to deter rust. And that makes the work all the more messy. I for one am glad to see the end of these. I used to regard the single piston floating sliding calipers with distrust, but not anymore. With over 30 years of problems with the old design, I have had enough.
The new designs are well plated and with huge alloy wheels, it is good to see something other than a blob of rust. Long term? I don't know. With 150,000 miles on my 95SET, the floating front calipers never created any problems at all. I had 130,000 miles on the OEM pads. I had to rebuild 4 piston Volvo front calipers once. It is like building a ship inside of a bottle, or perhaps building 4 ships in a bottle.
And the old parking drum brakes are a problem too. They will all start to self destruct if not opened up and lubricated. They are shipped without lubrication from the factory. And when they start to go, folks and dealers adjust the parking brake, which is only throwing fuel on the fire!
