Observations on a 2.3lpt

I've had a 2000 2.3lpt auto Wagon for about 5 weeks. Sometimes this car was so slow off the mark that it was embarrassing, other times it was fine, particularly on cool damp days (rare here in S. Florida). This was perplexing and I was quite unhappy with the performance when compared to my V6 Sedan which is always very strong off the line.
Once, I filled up with premium instead of the normal regular. Low and behold, the lackluster move offs went away; the performance was consistant and improved. Switching back to regular, the problem returned. My conclusion is that with the warm climate here, the knock sensor was detecting pre-ignition with low octane fuel, and either retarding the ignition or reducing boost to correct it.
In conclusion, I would recommend a switch to premium for folks running a 2.3lpt in warm climates.
