You can buy a stock "throttle body cleaner" (in a spray can) at a local parts store. Probably carburator cleaner has a similar composition and effect. You have to remove the air intake hose on top of throttle body and spray onto the butterfly and walls around. Wipe out, repeat several times. (I also sprayed into the inlet under the butterfly). After this has been done, I started the engine and noticed quickly a difference in the way the engine starts (much more "eagerly") and also on the fact that there was no hesitating, fluctuating idle anymore.
As for the fuel system, I bought "fuel injector cleaner" at a gas station and poured it into a full tank. I did not re-tank until almost empty so I would not dilute the chemicals. It made a noticeable difference in the way the engine is now running (more smooth now), too.
No more stalling or rough idle occured since this treatment. It is a cheap, simple procedure and it works. And I believe that many throttle bodies would not have to be changed if this was done. But it is a 20 minutes job and I do not think dealers are interested to do that on a regular basis.
