How do you use TCS?

I suppose old habits die hard and that's why I've never really used the TCS. TCS was something that kicked in when I made a mistake. I would drive like I normally would in slippery conditions. That means I'd take it easy on the gas- and let up a bit when I start to lose traction.
Last night I tried something different. I gave it enough gas that the TCS would kick in, but not so much that it would cut power to the engine. By doing this the TCS decided which wheel to send power to and resulted in fairly reliable acceleration. (I'm talking about starting from a standing stop BTW) I think the resulting acceleration was even better than my traditional method of driving in the snow.
How do you use TCS? I've always considered it somewhat of a safety feature rather than a convenience feature, but it does allow one to get up to speed relatively easily in less than ideal road conditions. That is assuming of course, the person driving realizes the consequences of that speed when it comes time to turn or stop.
One possible drawback I've considered when using the technique described above would be in the event of sudden improvement of road conditions (through a tunnel for example) where sudden, unexpected accleration might result. Any other reasons to be careful with TCS?
