Simon,
I just picked up my 2003 9-5 Aero last week, after trading in my 2000 9-5 Aero, and I have noticed the exact same issues that you have when backing up and when rolling at low speeds. In my opinion (and it's just my opinion) I think that this is a gearbox issue, that is a result of the new gear ratios in the 5 speed auto. I never, ever noticed this in my last car, which had a 4 speed auto. I do notice that in normal driving, the rpm on this new vehicle stays lower than the previous one, as it drives in 4th gear, where as in the last Aero I had, I kept it in 3rd gear around town. I also notice that this odd behaviour does not happen when I use the "manu-matic" mode, because I generally tend to keep the rpm's up higher in the torque curve. My car only had 500 miles on it, so I will give it some time to see if this lessens or goes away as the vehicle breaks in a little. I do have to take it to the dealer on Thursday and I am going to mention it to the Master Mechanic to see if he can explain it. If I find anything out, I will post it.
