I have a UK 2000 9-5 Aero manual estate, 27,000 miles. My computer often(maybe once every few weeks/400 miles) loses track of average fuel consumption - and instead of showing, say 26mpg, suddebly I'll notice its showing a very low value - always less than 10. I don't believe it's simply that display of the leading digit is intermittent - since 26-ish mpg will become something like 4.7.
This doesn't seem to happen when the car is in use. Mostly (probably always) I notice this has happend after starting the car. I have on some occasions provoked the computer to show the wrong average by starting the engine (from cold) then stalling it by pulling off with the brakes on; after switching ignition off then on sometimes average is then displayed wrong. (Unfortunately not always!)

Once the diplay is showing less than 10mpg it doesn't recover until I reset it.

The Distance-To-Empty reading always seems realistic -it doesn't become wrong when the avergae consumption is wrong.

First noticed this issue when the car was returned after a visit to dealer at 10 months/10000 miles for a few things including calibrating the average consumption which had been 15% optimistic. Dealer reckons nothing they did could possibly have started this problem. Dealer later changed computer for a supposedly working one. No change in behaviour.

Saab UK and the dealer are now telling me that I'm using the computer wrongly. I always reset it when filling up with fuel - so my average is only ever from the last fill-up. They're telling me this will confuse the computer because it's not meant to be used like this- instead it should be left for much longer periods. I find this rather hard to believe, especially since this approach was fine for the 1st 10 months.

Anyone have any ideas on what's going on here?

Also, if any of you out there use the computer in the same way as me (reset when you fill up) please let me know, together with where you are (ie which market you're in) & whether or not you have a similar problem.

Thanks for your help,
Pete
