I use the SID the same way you do- I reset with each fill up. I've got an '02 Aero wagon and I'm in Canada.
I haven't had any problems doing this, and I don't see why you should. It seems like what your dealer is saying is that one tank of gas does not provide a large enough sample size to determine the mean with sufficient accuracy. I doubt this is the case.
The only time something similar happens to me is immediately after I fill up- The mileage will read very high for a few minutes and then go back to what I'd expect- so based on my experience, it would appear that there is a large enough sample size after only a few minutes of driving- not several weeks.
Being in Canada, my mileage reads in metric of course, but I do recall reading something in the manual about the different unit options for the SID. IIRC, there's three settings: Purely metric for us Canucks and other civilized countries, US imperial for the 'mercans and English empirial for the Red Coats. Is it possible your display is somehow jumping between English and metric units?
