I have not had a transmission failure, but I had to have my slave cylinder replaced last summer to a tune of $760 parts and labor. I found out there is quite a bit of labor involved as you mentioned.
I have noticed shifting has not been as smooth since last fall. I had 60k service at that time and do not know what type of fluid was used. It has the toughest time going from 5th to 4th. I previously had an Acura 5sp with 132k and no tranny issues, so I do not think it is me.
