Down shifting to second is where bad syncros would turn up first. For that matter it is unusual to damage any other than 2nd gear, though I have managed to get 3rd a bit chrunchy on an Italian gear box with ring syncros. However what happens normally with bad syncro is grinding gears when shifting, not problems engaging the gear. Inability to engage the gear would likely indicate something like incorrectly adjusted shift linkage or something bent inside the transmission.
