You will not get good traction with cheaper tires. Your cornering performance will not be what is could be, and your braking ability has nothing to do with brake hardware. Most always braking is limited by tire traction. And in the wet, a performance tire will have a huge braking and control advantage over cheaper tires.

The Bridgestone S-03's are around $130 each. Perhjaps not cheaper, but you would be hard pressed to find a better performance tire at any price.

I consider good tires and brakes to be a neccesity for safety reasons.

There is a tirerack site not too far from you. Thwy will mount on your rims is you drive there.
