I did the 3x ATF changes over a month's time period on my 2002 9-3 SE (Search the 9-3 BB for mre detail if you like) and found that it did shift much more smoothly afterwards.
Drive it at least 100 (one hundred) miles and change it again. Repeat it a 3rd time. Then you'll REALLY be amazed.--I drove mine about 250 miles between changes because it was soooo cold here and then repeated it.
