I don't know which year they switched it, but my U.S.-spec '02 Aero's speedo is compressed at high speeds; past 85 mph (I think), the markings are bunched up.
And back to the first car I've ever driven (a '78 Buick), U.S.-spec speedos have always had markings primarily in mph, and secondarily, in a smaller font, in km/h. Dunno if that was always the case, maybe some of the older guys can comment?
I guess the U.S. DOT is hopeful that we'll eventually go metric? Personally, I wish we would fully convert. Why is it in the States, only cola is sold by the liter? (e.g., Coke 2 liter bottles)
As for Canadian-spec cars having only km/h, it actually helped a Canadian friend get out of a few speeding tickets south of the border! "But officer, I really didn't know how fast I was going, look at my speedometer!" :-)
