What exactly can you define as "bad old days of NG 900" as you never owned a NG 900?!!
I had no turbo troubles of ANY NG 900 that I owned in the "bad old days" : 1996 SET/1998 SET CV and continuing with 1999 9-3 HOT all of which had the Garrett turbo.
Turbo woes of SAAB history are few and fading in the distance. The early Classic 900 (C900) turbos had issues, as they were only oil cooled. The oil would coke on shut down, causing premature bearing failure. When the water cooled turbo made it to the C900, the failure rate dropped dramatically.
Finally, proper consideration of the high quality of lubrication TODAY aka synthetic oils, v mineral oils of 20 yrs ago helps to insure turbo performance and longevity.
About the only problem on today's SAAB turbos is the wastegate rusting---which generally appears on higher mileage cars. The smoke thing is a minutia in the big picture of SAAB--there was a bad production run of some Garrett turbo units on 9-5's.
The "blue smoke issue" is still cured in 3 ways:
PCV enlargement
ECU reprogramming
Turbo replacement
Sometimes one of these is satisfactory--othertimes a combination of these is required.
