Well, Mike, I can only go by what I was told. In February 02' during my 10k service I sat around and chit-chatted with the Motor Werks people. They sell BMW, Honda, Saab, Mercedes, and Cadillac. They're a really huge dealer in the upscale, old-town meets suburban location of Barrington. I've heard that they had the best service for all of these cars in the city so I went there. They told me they wished Saab had kept the hatch back version, which I thought was a dumb thing to say to someone who was asking to drive the new 9-3. Anyway, I said I couldn't wait to get another Saab, maybe this time a 9-3 Vector and that is when they said they could pull some strings and get an early out which would be 6 months. I thought, COOL!
Then, I stopped in to see earlier this month if the Vector had come in to a typical GM Cadillac Saab dealer (Patrick C/S) near my work place. They didn't have it yet but said that they had a waiting list of people who wanted to drive it! Anyway, I said how do I get out of my current lease? They said, they could also get me out at 6 months. They said the reasoning was that Saab USA was very concerned about losing any of the people on current leases, b/c they feel that the current lease people are often people who are new to Saab. So, they felt they could get some special early outs. They said the magic 6 month number, not me, so presumably there is (or was?) some early out deal going on.
People talk about the North East as Saab territory but they should also realize there are A LOT of late model Saabs--mostly 9-3s but also 9-5s--in Chicago. In fact, in the city proper and on the major commuter arteries there are a noticeable number of Saabs at most anytime. We have SIX Saab dealers (2 Saab only, 2 long time Saab/other Euro car, 2 GM uptarts) all in the general Chicago area. It would be interesting to see if Saab USA would give you regional stats on numbers sold.
