You may get divergent opinions on the mileage question, but I believe that a prudent driver can easily beat a cruise control unit for fuel economy. Generally speaking,a steady consistant speed is optimal, which is what a cruise unit is supposed to deliver, but those units cannot anticipate downgrades and upgrades which a driver can. For example, on a downgrade, I will accelerate just before reaching the bottom to add to the momentum, and will let up on the gas and "coast" over the crest at the end of an upgrade. I have compared "cruise on" vs. "cruise off" mileage figures many times on trips from Puget Sound to Spokane and "off" always wins. My 1999 9-5V6 usually gets from 29 to 33 mpg on trips, using premium gas and 75 to 85 mph in open country.
