This is the foundation of a tire. Cheap tires have garbage casings. Cheap tires have compounds that vulcanize quickly making the tire rock hard after a few thousand miles, compromising braking, handling, ABS activation, wet performance, dry performance, road noise...... pretty much everything. Cheap tires have compositions that increase rolling resistance which reduces fuel mileage in favor of roadholding ability.

The Sumitomo HTR is made by Goodyear/Dunlop and uses the same casing as the Dunlop SP Sport 5000, an excellent HPAS tire. The Kumho 712 also uses a very good casing but tends to suffer from some of the maladies I mentioned above. Basically its a tire that is worshipped by amateur autocrossers because its sticky and cheap. A good tire for the price but that's it.

The Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus uses perhaps the best casings in the world for an all season radial. Its a tire that does everything well but does not shine in one particular area. I will never understand those who dis this tire as it is simply one of the highest quality tires in the world. The product that pops out of Michelin's tire mold is fantastic, something that cannot be said for the vast majority of junk passing for tires.

Installing a shit tire on your Civic is fine; the suspension is so crude that any tire will work OK. The car can't tell the diff. Install a shit tire onto a Saab with their sophisticated suspensions and you may just end up hating your car. Expensive cars need a top quality tire to maximize the abilities of the suspension, steering, and braking systems.

It's your car and your money so put whatever tire you want. But ya better know a little about tires beyond the brand name and the price tag in order to get the most out of your car.
