Or have any involvment with any tire-related business. I've spent the past few years researching tires and tire mfr'ing which is where I derive my info.
Perhaps the Civic example was a poor one. I should have made that example more generic. The point is that an inexpensive economy car designed and built at a price point is usually not sophisticated enough to respond to a high quality tire. A cheap tire on an economy car is fine. A cheap tire on a car with a highly engineered suspension is a compromise and a mistake.
Complaining about Michelin's high prices is very common. So is attributing their prices to marketing costs. Both points completely sidestep the fact that Michelin is widely regarded as producing the best quality tires in the world. Their QC is second to none. That QC is part of what you pay for. Is their involvement in Formula One factored into their retail pricing structure? I don't know.... probably. But so what? The bottom line is the quality of the tire that is installed on your car.
For the record I do not own a set of Michelin tires nor do I have any personal or financial interest in the company. The current tire on my car is the Bridgestone Potenza RE950. I have two sets of custom wheels in my garage; one has a set of Yokohamas and the other a set of Toyos.
