True, but that's not my point. Most people travelling on corporate business can't justify luxury-car upgrades. Plus, most of the upgraded cars at places like Avis are Buick LeSabres instead of Buick Centuries.
The main point is that the OEMs use the rental fleets to move the junk they can't sell retail... in the case of GM, they continue to make some cars solely to fulfill rental fleet needs such as the old-style Chevy Blazer (retail units are the newer Trailblazer). As a result, the only interaction some potential car shoppers probably have with GM cars are these crappy boring cars.
In my case, my company's policy is that business travellers have to use Avis (only GM cars) and getting anything upgraded past a mid-level car will attract attention to your expense report. I could pay a couple of bucks a day for an upgrade, but often find that the upgraded cars aren't worth anything extra.
In GM's case, they don't even make an affordable convertible any longer, so Avis doesn't have anything to offer that's potentially fun when travelling to a nice climate.
Every time I look through the Avis lot, it just reminds me that GM is barely in the car business... all they have that's relatively new are trucks and SUVs.
