Hi,

Heel-and-toe downshifting refers to the technique of simultaneously depressing the brake and throttle pedals with your right foot, while your left foot is busy actuating the clutch. The advantage of this technique is that it allows you match the engine rpm to the transmission rpm of the new "lower" gear that you have selected. While the clutch is depressed (and teh brake - since you are slowing down) you "blip" the throttle to keep the rpm's up as you let out the clutch. If done properly the car does not lurch when the clutch is released in the lower gear. This technique is critical in racing situations as the car may already be at the limit of tire adhesion and a lurching downshift could easily result in loss of car control. In daily driving it has relatively little advantage... less clutch wear (maybe). It is a finesse issue with those folks who enjoy the "art" of driving. As a long distance commuter - it relieves the boredom factor - makes exit ramps a little more fun.

The next trick is shifitng without the clutch - which requires a real tactile sense - or "crunch"... I find clutchless shifting in the Aero nearly impossible (probably because I have not driven Saabs for very long - 10 months)
