I drove a Volvo V6 wagon and a 9-5 V6 wagon, both automatics. I had no intension of getting an autobox, but ...
The Volvo was competent but boring. When I got onto the throttle it shifted down, reved up made lots of fuss and did go faster. The 9-5 simply got on boost and hauled butt, did not shift down and rev in RPM ranges where it could not breath.
And did I drive the S80, no. But there was a matter of connection when driving. The Volvo was sort of boring and did not inspire. We are talking about a lot of money. Whatever your friend gets, it really had better turn your crank! If your friend is after a smoother ride, perhaps the 9-5 with the V6 would be better than the Aero. He should get the one that gets him excited.
Now are we talking wagons? We found the luggage space of the Volvo sedans to be lacking. I guess I can't speak to the space in the 9-5 Sedan, we were Wagon bound by the time we got to the Saab dealer.
