is one explaination I use. A full size spare also affects the weight distribution and fuel economy adversely. In SoCal the roads are pretty good and a flat is rare and road-side assistance is pletiful. It's nice to have a 5th tire and wheel in case you bend a rim or when you need tires you'll need only 3, but I've had only one or two flats, I don't think any on my cars but on cars I've stopped and helped people with, and I like the ease of handling the donut.
A full size signifacatly intrudes on trunk space in a 9-5 sedan. It sits higher (thicker) by about 2-3". In a wagon a full size fits under the floor fine, you just lose some of the storage under the floor.
