My speakers fit fine, and yes a bit tigher in on the driver's side. The speaker terminals with the wires and boots on do go thru with friction and when you remove the speaker the boots want to pull off. Perhaps your terminals can be pressed in closer to the speaker magnet?

I don't know if the tweeter touches the grill or not. I did tighen the mounting screws to help pull the speaker into the soft upper layer of the dash to keep it as low as possible, and I used washers to help the screws do this. So check that out too. So other than that this vertical interference with the black ring removed seems odd. I will try to see what the clearance is with mine.
