I'm pretty sure it isn't a broken hose because the check engine light/fault code hasn't come back since I cleared it. Hence I suspect an intermittent fault with the purge control valve or the valve on the charcoal cannister. I suppose it could also be some other leak in the intake system that the computer is mis-interpreting as a leak in the evap emissions system. I haven't found one yet, though.
The gas cap was tight and it's been a while since fill-up so I don't think that is the problem. Also, the cap was left loose once and we got a message on the dash to that effect.
It looks like there's a "evap inspection port" in the line leading to the charcoal cannister. Presumably that can be used to check the system. Any suggestions on how to use it?
I will say that it is a pain working on a car without a good manual. I may have to spring the bucks for the workshop CD.
