handsfree kit -- making it work w/ my phone

I have a Siemens S46 phone. I have a portable handsfree kit, the find with a speaker and mike that plugs into the cigarette lighter (not the kind w/ the ear bud and mike, although I can get one of those as well).
What I'd planned on doing was to use the cable from my hands free kit and just hook it up to the harness connector I got from Saab.
When I opened up the hands free kit, I discovered that there is quite a bit of circuitry in there. I just expected the cables to be routed to the various components.
I guess there is a transformer, and some sort of amplifier for the speaker, and maybe for the mic as well.
Does anyone know if I should just cut the wires at the speaker and mike and connect to the harness after the circuitry, or should I figure out what the mic and speaker output are from the phone and hok up without the circuitry at all?
If I can cut out the circuitry, I'll just get the ear bud thing and use that cable. I can get one that includes a car charger. I figure I probably need that circuitry.
Anyone try to custom fit a phone?
Any EE's out there?
Thanks, I'll post the results of my experiment/experience.
James
