Wet traction? I agree. Driving concervatively? Well, I look at it this way. With a good vehicle, your braking performance will not be limited by the braking system itself, but by the tire to road traction. So when you make are in emergency braking, your rate of deceleration is controlled by the tires.
Maybe you don't speed or race around, but you life may depend on your ability to stop, and your tires are the main determanent. And as you spend so much time on the highway, you have need of really good braking performance. Speed kills.
I use max performance tires for wet traction and braking reasons. The Potenza S-03's seem to the best product these days, and reasonably priced for this class of tires. All new tires will be smooth and quiet. Some tires age harden and loose there traction. And wet traction is something that one has to eval on a cold rainy night, not in the summer time.
Spending more on the best tires is incrementally more expensive, but think of it as insurance. The benefit will not be a payout after an accident, but perhaps no accident at all. So the tires cost $40 more each, this is not something to cheap-out on! Spend some time reading the reviews at tirerack.
