Head Gasket / Water Pump at 65K?? (long) Posted by saabrob [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Just had my '99 2.3lpt SW/65K at the dealer for a routine oil change service. Picking it up, Service Manager claims they found some "issues" with the car, namely oil leaking from the head gasket and coolant leaking from water pump. Naturally their solution was replacement of both to the tune of $1400. I have not noticed either problem. If they are leaking, it's not finding it's way to my garage floor. These "issues" weren't noted at the 60K major service either (another dealer).
Anyway, my concern is their lack of concern. Service Manager gave me the r/r estimate and said to monitor the fluid levels until I decided what I wanted to do. If a head gasket was about to let go, wouldn't the recommendation be a bit more urgent? Or is a little oil seepage from the gasket within some kind of acceptable limit? (Tech said it's not "gushing" out - whatever that means). I've read a few posts regarding head bolts needing re-torqued around the same mileage. Could this be part/all of the problem? Be a heck of a lot easier (read:cheaper) than replacing it.
As far as the water pump goes, I've searched the archives and found little about water pump failure (using DexCool) and nothing regarding leaky pumps. Anyone seen similar problem? Does the pump fail gradually (past auto experiences - increased leakage). Is monitoring the situation ok for now or am I asking for an ill-timed catastrophic pump failure?
Any comments, advice, answers much appreciated.
Rob
Oh yeah, FWIW - have a '89 900 TC with 221K that has yet to need a head gasket or water pump. Hmmmm....
