Hi William,
Although rare, I have seen this before in blades that have replaceable inserts (happened on my 1998 3-series BMW). I think water acts as a lubricant and facilitates the slipping of the alloy inset/stiffeners. Some blades have full "crimping" on both ends and cannot come apart - but you must replace the the whole arm - which is the system I switched to in the Bosch system. You must live in a "cleaner" environment than me because I have rarely had blades last more than 10K before they soften and become substandard (and I wipe them down every time i wash my windshield, ie. ~daily).
Best,
Eric
