I have both the 9-3 and 9-5. The 9-5 is a better car out of the box, and with sportier springs, shocks, etc. will be more comfy AND handle better.
I like my 9-3 a lot, but it has it's shortcomings. The 9-3 can be considerably improved with aftermarket stuff, but at the end of the day, you'll still want your Subie for top performance, and you'll never really get rid of some of the design flaws on the 9-3 (steering/front suspension quirks and tight pedal placement/footwell room).
