Another cause of knock is build-up of combustion chamber deposits, which can lead to engines requiring higher octane, and even poorer anti-knock "de-tuning" performance as ECUs detect and prevent knock. Key here is to keep deposits from forming in combustion chambers.

There's an interesting conflict inherent in gasoline deposit-control additive (aka DCA) chemistry. Almost all DCAs used to fight fuel injector and intake valve deposits actually contribute to combustion chamber deposits over time (when used in sufficient quantities to be effective on modern high-performance injectors). The only chemical family of DCAs which don't contribute to combustion chamber deposits are polyetheramines (PEA). Amoco, Texaco, and Chevron all used to use PEAs, but now only Chevron does (Techron). Amoco has moved to the much cheaper @#$%^& stuff that BP and Arco use (Arco puts even less DCA than BP/Amoco in their gas). Texaco moved to Shell's cheaper and less effective polybuteneamine chemistry (their new stuff's even cheaper, not as good as Chevron's Techron, and can't effectively clean up dirty injectors and valves). Exxon and Mobil provide worse deposit control performance than BP (though not as bad as Arco).

I paid $34k for my new (and first) Saab ('03 Arc 3.0t w/touring package, black w/tan). I'll put about 24k miles a year on it, spending over $2,000 for gasoline. I'm willing to spend an extra $50 a year for Chevron to ensure deposits don't hurt my engine's performance.

Jeez, sorry for my rant...
