US, Europe and Ausie octane differences

Octane numbers in North America are calculated a bit differently than in Europe (and Asia and Australia I think).

There are two different octane numbers: Research Octane Number (RON) which correlates best to low-speed knock conditions; Motor Octane Number (MON) which correlates with high-speed high temp conditions. RON is always a higher number than MON.

Europe (and I believe Asia/Australia) use RON as their posted octane. North America (and Latin America, I suspect) use the Anti-Knock Index (AKI, but state-side we refer to this as the octane) which is calculated from RON and MON by the equation (RON+MON)/2. AKI is the number seen on the octane stickers posted at the pumps (with the above "higher math" equation noted in small print on the stickers).

When folks see different knocking and pinging results from gasolines with the same octane rating, this is usually because of a MON which is much lower than the RON (say >8-10 points). Switching brands sometimes work if the new brand has a narrower RON-MON difference. However, given that many base gasolines (i.e. pre-additized) around the US are comingled in pipelines and distribution terminals, brands may share these base gasolines (even majors like Shell, Chevron, Exxon, Mobil, Texaco, etc) so no difference would be seen.
