ALL filters will let some dirt thru with the air. If they didn't, they'd be far too restrictive! What's most important to the owner? It's not nearly as simple as "No Dirt!" Like DavidFL said, performance (increased air processing) is another consideration. For me, re-use-ability was a big concern.
Let's look at this test a little closer. What about his theoretical example of "100g of dust"? Well, to start with, his numbers are incorrect. He says that 14.8g is "224% more dust" than 6.6g. Actually, it's only 124% MORE dust. (If you start out with 6.6g, then another 6.6g (or 13.2g total) would be 100% MORE dust.) OK, a simple phrasing mistake, right? (He just happens to state it twice, spelling it out for emphasis.) Wait a minute ... 100 grams of dust? That's nearly a quarter pound! What would your airbox look like if you threw that much dirt up the intake?? Is this test valid under actual driving conditions?
(there's another test linked below)
Testing the oil would add another level of data to these tests, as that would show how much dirt is actually making it into the engine. Filtration is always a trade-off between reduced flow & reduced efficiency. The real question is, which reduction are you willing to put up with?
