I would not say that dumping 1/4 pound of dust (100 grams) into a filter in 1/2 hour is representative of anything. Unless you are using your BMW off road a lot.
The oil migration and wetting of the dirt captured in a K&N type filter will be time sensitive. I cleaned K&N's on a 95SET and a Passat diesel for years and there was not much dirt in them at annual cleanings. And in both cases, the red oil on the backside of the filter was clear and glistening. Grease and oil smeared onto the lids of the air boxes does hot show dirt after a year with wiped with a white tissue.
The K&N cleans with depth. So its a bit different than a surface effect filter. Yes the areas were different. Yes the K&N still has a lower pressure drop.
I think that the test was quite meaningless because of the amount and rate of dust loads.
Anyone who gets 1/4 pound of dirt in their filters might have a cause for concern. But anyone who drives in such conditions obviously does not care.
