15 easy steps:

1. Go for a short drive to warm up the oil- this will allow it to drain better. It will also allow you to burn yourself on hot engine parts, that way you'll look like an official mechanic.

2. Jack the car up, or drive up onto ramps, or alternatively put one side of the car on the curb. For best drainage from the oil filter jack up the right (passenger) side of the car.

3. Most important step- support the car properly with jack stands and block the wheels that are on the ground. This isn't necessary with ramps (stands that is, blocking the wheels is a good idea either way.) DO NOT GO UNDER THE CAR IF IT IS SUPPORTED ONLY BY THE JACK!!!! I'm not sure if this is what you meant by not putting it up on stands but your life isn't worth it.

4. Give the car a jiggle- better it falls off the stands when your standing beside it.

5. Remove the oil drain plug (6 point, 13mm socket) and let the oil drain into a suitable container. Careful! Don't forget you warmed up the oil!

5. Remove the oil filter and allow the oil to drain.

6. Fill the new filter with oil and smear some on the gasket.

7. Put the filter on- tighten it about 1 turn past the point where it just starts to snug up. Don't use a filter wrench to install the filter- a shop rag helps out if you've got slippery hands.

8. Replace the oil drain plug, don't forget to replace the washer (buy a new one at the dealership when you buy your filter) Tighten to 25Nm

9. Lower the car, and remove the wheel blocks

10. Add 4L of your favourite motor oil (minus whatever you added to the filter). If your not sure which oil to use do a search here. Once you're thoroughly confused with all of the different opinions go back to your owner's manual and just use something that meets the specs in there. I use Mobil 1 5W30.

11. Start the car. Do not rev it up, just let it idle for a spell.

12. While the car is idling, take a peek underneath and make sure something hasn't gone terribly wrong.

13. Shut the car off, and check the oil level. Add a bit more if necessary (not likely if you used 4L)

14. Write down the mileage and date and staple the reciepts for the oil and filter to it and save it for future reference in case theres any warranty disputes.

15. Congratulate yourself on a job well done.
