Hi Mat,

The Saab turbos are both water *and* oil cooled, Saab having added water jackets to the turbo bearings with the 9000T in '87. While that car retained the direction to idle the car after stopping, Saab later formally dropped the recommendation when they ascertained that the water cooling did its job. In addition, oil has gotten so much better since then, it's not as susceptable to coking, especially the recommended synthetic formulas.

Should shaving car weight and increasing gas mileage while retaining power ever become industry goals again, I'd think we'd see a lot of turbos returning to the marketplace. A lot of manufacturers built turbo cars without getting it right, and hesitate to revisit the technology. Today, VW-Audi and Volvo seem to be the closest to Saab in keeping the turbo torch alive.

Something to keep in mind about RWD packaging is the interior space gobbled up by the transmission and driveshaft, one of the reasons Saabs have always been so roomy. The 9^5 is quite large inside compared to, say, the 5-series BMWs, or even the Merc Es.

I've not had my 9^5 much past 100 mph, and I agree that it's completely unruffled and barely stretching its legs at those speeds. My 9kT saw over 130 in its day, without coming close to its maximum. These days I simply don't relish the possibility of sampling the food in some rural Nevada jail for a few days, and the 9^5 isn't a car that I think I'd ever do track time in. Perhaps some of our Western European 9^5ers can weigh in.
