9-5 maintenance costs? Unbiased responses please

Hi,
The wife and I are debating with what do we replace our '97 900s. We're considering an '00-'01 9-5 wagon. The 900s was our first SAAB, and we have been somewhat troubled by the high maintenance costs. Its never let us down, but the general maintenance has been pretty expensive vis a vis the subarus, hondas and toyotas we have owned previously ($700 rotors and pads, $750 rear and center exhaust - can't wait to see what the catalytic will cost, $1200 steering rack (warranty got that one)). Don't get me wrong, we love the car and would have trouble moving to a sterile japanese appliance car. We also have a Volvo 850 (also '97) that has been 100% trouble fee, and the maintenance has been CONSIDERABLY cheaper than the SAAB. Maybe its the mechanics (different mechanics), maybe its the cars. But, I've always heard about SAABs having high parts and maintenance costs (fewer cars sold, fewer parts made etc.).

So, a 9-5 would be way way more fun to drive than another Brick, but I don't know if I am ready to face more expensive wear and tear maintenance. We always use indies, hardly ever use dealers. I do basic stuff like oil changes, tire rotations, and spark plugs, but not much beyond that (no time, tools, inclination). Looking for some honest, unbiased advice.
