"I read when Volvo debuted curtain airbags in the S80 sedan that the curtains help prevent broken glass from entering the cabin and also help keep passengers' heads within the vehicle during an accident, especially a roll-over. Side airbags do not do that."
The side airbags in the 9-5 are apparently not like side airbags in other cars, as they also inflate up around the head area, protecting the head from side impacts. That is why it's just as good as a curtain airbag.
