Yes, the viscous losses will increase, but the oil can reduce the over all friction losses. So the losses do not go up with some oils, sometimes they go down. That would not be true for dyno oils.
With my 95SET with 110K, I switched from Mobil 1 10W30 to Mobil Delvac One 5W40, and my MPGs went up, not down. With that oil my MPGs were by far the best that they ever were. My engine was quieter and smoother too. Some of this probably a result of the larger clearances in a mature engine.
