Ken,
You are right, most of the posts are pre '02 model 9-5's. Guess someone should take a few seconds to read before ranting!
The '02 on base linear suspension IS NOT the MY '00-01 aero suspension. The chassis was improved significantly for MY '02 on, but IIRC, much of the improvement was due to stiffer body and different chassis design / mounts, etc. The improvement for the base '02+ was good enough that many think it was just a swap of the earlier aero.
I was hoping to put the '02 aero suspension on my MY '99, and was disappointed to find that the parts do NOT interchange for the earlier models, except the sway bars.
Other than that Turbo5spd is right on. You can either go aftermarket or with OEM parts, and you have the advantage of the '02 suspension improvements for the aero, too. For the older model, I went w/OEM springs and Bilstiens, but would have preferred the newer setup b/c it is much improved.
If I were you, I'd personally go OEM aero, but the aftermarket is available. Prices were almost identical if you go w/one of the saabnet sponsors who discounts 18-20%. Nick @ Taliaferro and Todd @ BRI - saabcenter have both been good to deal with for me on that issue. You can go all the way and upgrade the bushings, etc, but I'd try the swaybars first, then springs/shocks, unless you want to just do it once, which would be cheaper overall from a labor point of view.
You will need the chassis codes if you want to go with the aero; and you may want to check on wait time; I'm still waiting for rear springs and sway bar brackets, which should be in next week...or so.
I now don't remember which flavor wagon you have (another didn't pay attention reader ;-) ), but the spring codes in the front often vary depending on whether you have an auto or a 5spd, and the rear whether it is a wagon or a sedan, although it is not always that case. Here are some codes I've pulled when I was looking to put in '02 springs into mine. But you can match the suspension codes from the same flavor body & transmission aero to your linear, and go from there.
The codes are on a tag / sticker on or near the left front strut tower; open the hood and it will be near the VIN tag. Some cars have one tag with the VIN and chassis codes both listed.
From left to right these codes represent:
spring front,
spring rear,
anti roll bar front,
anti roll bar rear,
spring strut/insert front and
shock absorber rear
Here are various codes I've pulled:
'02 linear 5spd sed CV DK HH 4 BC
'02 aero 5spd sed GA DY JJ 6 BD
'03 aero auto sed GB DY JJ 7 BD
'03 aero auto wgn GA EF JJ 6 BJ
'03 aero 5spd wgn GA EF JJ 6 BJ
'01 aero auto wgn CL DG H G lL 9
'00 aero auto sed CL-DF-H-G-L-L
'00 aero 5spd sed CK-DF-H-G-K-L
'00 5spdsedAero CK-DF-H-G-K-L
'01 aero 5spd wgn K-DG-H-G-K-9
'01 aero 5spd sed CK-DE-H-G-K-L
Hope this helps, and good luck w/the upgrading!
