Need help carrying canoe!

I posted this last summer, but I decided to to backpacking for my vacation instead so I didn't really concern myself with a solution.
I can't find a place to secure the front of my canoe when its on the roof of my Aero wagon! Last year somebody mentioned tying it to the licence plate frame, but I'm skeptical this is strong enough. The only tie down seems to be the one included with the tool kit- and I think that's meant to be used as an attachment point when trailering the car, not used while the car is moving due to low ground clearance. I don't want to think what would happen if that hook took a good impact, and the areas where you'd typically be taking a canoe generally require all the ground clearance you can get!
I've got the Thule canoe carrier (exact same as the one in the Saab catalog, only cheaper) and the rear tie down is easy, but what about the front?
Has anyone done this successfully? I know there must be a way if Saab is selling a canoe rack! What about hooking a rope under each fender?
If there is a place to tie down to under the front of the car, does tightening the rope damage the front chin spoiler?
Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated
Thanks,
bRAD
