the towing eye goes horizontally into the cross beam, and extends forward max 6 " - right? So how does that lower ground clearance lower than it already is? (the frame member defines the low point, doesn't it? ) Compared to the force exerted by a tow chain pulling the car out of something, the canoe, already tied down to the rack, is peanuts, isn't it? The vector down is the front weigth of the canoe, plus the tie downs, and the wind works against that, and the rope to the eye just adds enough so that the wind doesn't overcome all of that downward force. If the eye will take the weight of the car, it will take the upward thrust of wind minus the rack tie down force minus the weight of the canoe, and then some.
I would think it wouldn't be that much trouble to be careful not to hit a curb. Maybe I'm missing something.
