9-5 vs 5 Series, not 3 Series

Being a new Saab owner ('03 9-5 Arc), I'm confused every time I see the 9-5 compared with BMW's 3-series. I don't believe they're comparable to each other, as they satisfy different sets of needs. The 3-series, though a fantastic car, is way too small and compact to compare with the 9-5, IMHO. The 5-series is the one to compare with the 9-5 (even though the 9-3 interior space in only a touch smaller!). The 9-5 wins on rear seat roominess (which was major for me). Also, once you start equiping the Aero and 5-series equivalently, the 5-series jumps well into the upper-$40s, even with the smaller 530i. Jump to the 540i for more giddy-up, you're into the $50s. The 530i sans sport package compares to my 9-5 Arc, but was about $9k more (got my Arc for $34k). This price delta is what settled my initial concerns over lower resale values for Saab.
A guy who worked for me also has the '02 330i. That is one great car, with incredibly balanced handling on the twisties! When I'm in the market for a performance sled with only occassional rear seat passengers, its definately on my shopping list (along with the 9-3, etc.).
