I've got a 1999 9-5 2.3L 5-spd that I've sport tuned and 6 weeks ago added a 330i with the new Performance Package (ZHP) to the garage. Both are excellent cars. Bottom line, the Saab is a better all-around vehicle. The BMW emphasizes the 'sports' in sports sedan.

The Saab is sporty, has enough luxury, has loads of room, and despite being a 1999, its design is still sharp. Tough to beat if you need room and still want a sport ride.

The BMW is smooth. The 6spd transmission and clutch just work together. The ride is stiffer (even vs sport shocks/springs in the Saab), but the car is smaller, a bit lighter, and feels like it can be 'thrown' into corners more aggressively. While peak power in the Saab feels like it runs from 2500-4000 rpm, the BMW hits its stride at 3500 and climbs readily past 5000 (redline is 6700 - haven't been there yet). Having said all this, it fits 4 adults around town or 2 adults and 2 kids cross country, but is shy of cargo space.

Each great cars, but each different.
