I would think that a wider plug gap would result in a larger voltage drop in the ion current measurement, due to increased resistance across the gap. For instance, place two electrodes in water say 12" apart, run a current and measure, then increase the distance to 24", and less current will pass due to the inceased resistance of the water. Maybe decreasing the spark plug gap to .034 from .039 is too small to have a significant impact in the voltage passed through the air/gas mixture, but given that it is low voltage I would think that there would be a measureable impact.
I would have thought that one of the reasons for the selection of a CD ignition system was to allow a larger plug gap, which with the strong spark characteristics of this system would improve combustion through facilitation of a quicker and more complete burn , particularily at higher boost and RPM conditions.
Based upon folks postings however, this does not appear to be the case.
I remain puzzled why Saab would not issue a service bulletin advising smaller plug gaps and more frequent plug changes. In my 99 9-5, I believe the plug gap is still recommended at .039 to .043.
