I'd say it definitely depends on your comfort level & change-interval goals.
You don't say what's in there now. Mobil 1 0W-40? Saab Syn Blend 5W-30? Accel 30wt? (That last one's the Wal-Mart value brand; it only meets (obsolete) API SA, costs $0.79/qt, & will start damaging your engine almost immediately.) If it's non-syn, over-the-counter, SL-rated oil, you've probably gone about 4k miles too far.
If it's a quality (Group IV/PAO) full syn, you should be safe going to 10k miles if it takes less than two years (18k miles/two years is the latest Saab limit with the new 6L oil sump & either Mobil 1 0W-40 or Saab 0W-30). But if you're not comfortable with that, start on a time-based change schedule rather than a mileage-based schedule. I don't think anyone here would argue against one-year change intervals.
Well, except maybe guys like me. After 10 mos I've only put 3,500 miles on my N/A C900, so I know I'll be running my 15W-50 M1 for at least 2&1/2 years if I decide to drain it after 10k miles. But who knows? If UOAs look good at that point, I may just change the filter & leave it in for another 10k.
