Hey Ed,
You're right, it's about 95%+ short trips (under 10 miles) for this car, so it definitely falls under the "severe service" guidelines. This car's owner's manual (it's a '90) says 7500 miles under normal conditions, but that's with non-syn oil. I've already decided to run UOAs every 5k miles & figger it'll be a good benchmark for future, "normal" driving. Like the "Oil Life Study" linked below, I may just run it until analysis says it's no longer providing proper protection.
Our '99 9-3 says 10k miles under normal conditions, but that also doesn't take into consideration a premium full-syn oil like the M1 0W-40 I've got in there now. I just got my first UOA back on this car (4700 miles in 7 mos, >90% short trips), but I'm still waiting for some data clarification on the report.
