The NG900s and C9-3's had this same arrangement. And I had your problem occur a while after I installed Koni shocks. These come with a replacement retaining nuts, round requiring a pin wrench-spanner that no one has. It had worked loose. I remove the strut and spring and remove the nut, degreased it, lots and lots of loctite blue and tighened it down again.
So I would check the retaining nut. On my 95SET you could jack up the vehicle and through the extended spring, move the boot up and access the nut. Perhaps you can do something like that to investigate if loose.
So to remove the strut on 2000- production, the ball joint is easy to release? It is major PIA on the Ng900 and 9-3's/
