the caliber of the person you'd be dealing with. Maybe it's just an LA thing, but I would NEVER think of asking anyone in a gas station ANYTHING except can I have the restroom key. They don't live nearby, they haven't been in the USofA more than 2 months, and they barely know how to get to work and back. They certainly don't know where the Marriott is, let alone where your Aunt Gertrude lives.
Anyhow, map reading is a vital skill if you're going to set out in a car. That and reading road signs correctly. Hell, in a pinch I'd use OnStar if I had to find a Chevron or a Wells Fargo, I sure wouldn't ask anyone.
A nav system either talking to me or showing me a high-res full-color display is a textbook example of distracted driving.
