I could be mistaken, but I believe the MSD system cannot perform ionic sensing through the spark plugs?
SAAB direct injection employs powerful computing power to calculate exactly how well the combustion process has completed--the spark plugs are used as sensors to read the exact ionic conditions in each cylinder.
From this, it can adjust the ignition timing and adjust the spark for any misfiring cylinder individually. Turbo boost and I think also fuel mixture can also be controlled by the system as needed.
Subtle engine knock can be detected which would otherwise be missed by a conventional "microphone" knock sensor. Miscellaneous engine noise which might trick a conventional knock sensor into thinking there was misfire is not an issue with Trionic.
The SAAB Trionic system is capable of firing off multiple sparks as necessary; also, it employs a special spark plug cleaning mode--840 sparks per second at 40,000 volts for 5 seconds!
The site below describes the DI in more detail; if you search the BB there are other more technical papers on this subject... happy reading!
