The turbo was extricated from the car and it indeed looked like an oil pump inside..!! Dropped it off at a long standing fuel injection and turbo specialist here in the DC area, but got his message on my answering machine that he can't do it. Don't know the details yet, but he was having trouble looking it up in his parts jobber's catalogs when I first called. It is a Garrett Model GT-17 (Made in Italy). His first comments were that it might be a "captured" model - perhaps meaning that it is a limited production model made exclusively for Saab.
As an avid DIY, I'm gonna be totally annoyed if there are no rebuild kits available anywhere for this specific turbo. $650 for a replacement unit from Saab dealers and a few aftermarket suppliers is a bit of a rip-off. As for the DI cassette..perhaps the smoking turbo was the culprit in tripping the "Check Engine" light. I guess I will just consider I now have a spare DI cassette, as an insurance recommended by quite a few Sabbnet comments on the topic.
If anybody has a source for the GT-17 turbo rebuild parts, I would be very interested to know...
Thanx,
Kirk D.
